Plastic Surgery in Atlanta, Georgia
Win Pound, M.D.
Plastic surgery as a specialty originated out of necessity during World Wars I and II. Due to the horrific injuries incurred, new techniques became necessary for reconstructing these injuries. Techniques used for reconstructing injuries were later modified to improve on non-injured patients for cosmetic purposes and the whole new specialty of plastic and reconstructive surgery was born.
When my father first started in practice as a plastic surgeon at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta in 1961, there were only a handful of plastic surgeons throughout the entire Southeastern part of the United States. Every third night, when my father was on call, he would travel the length and breadth of Georgia treating patients in various emergency rooms.
In 1976, my father, along with two other doctors, started the Atlanta Outpatient Surgery, Center, the first outpatient surgery center in Georgia. They felt that a lot of the surgeries that were being performed could be done on an outpatient basis and that patients would be more comfortable recovering in the comfort of their own home.
Today, there are over one hundred plastic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery operating in Atlanta. Many improvements that once required surgery can now be accomplished with non-invasive procedures such as injected filler materials and Botox. Unfortunately, this has attracted many doctors from other specialties into the realm of plastic surgery with disastrous results. For patients considering plastic surgery, it is always best to check credentials for a board-certified plastic surgeon.
